POSTER DESIGN

2019 ANNUAL JURIED STUDENT ART SHOW

I was commissioned by the Carthage College Art Department to design the 2019 Annual Juried Student Art Show gallery exhibition posters.

For the design of the poster I was asked for something that was "raw, irreverent, and humorous with possible historical references" to reflect the general attitude of that year's work.

In response to the direction I was given, I decided to simulate a framed picture of a critique and the screen-capture of the response. The critique is framed in an exceptionally gaudy and extravagant gold frame that is in direct contrast with stark white gallery walls. All text is centered either centered underneath or directly to the side: the same way that gallery tags are placed in an exhibit. I chose to take a very minimal approach to the overall layout of the poster to emulate a professional gallery installation.

The poster that was ultimately chosen was the vertical orientation of the framed critique. In order to get to that final winning draft, I created a series of alternate posters. The design for those posters were not nearly as "raw" and biting as my final draft, but they did include references to contemporary artists like Banksy, Damien Hirst, and Yayoi Kusama.
